Job Title: Senior Product Development Engineer

The Company

We are an early-stage startup with a four-person team and serious traction that needs a Senior Product Development Engineer (hardware) to help scale our novel robotic solution. Grain Weevil is an award-winning grain bin safety and management robot that protects people and profits by controlling risk, cost, and quality within post-harvest grain storage processes. We have been recognized by the National Science Foundation, the American Farm Bureau, the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, and have received backing from leading ag tech investors.

Currently, Grain Weevil is conducting on-farm trials in three states with our fleet of beta-testing robots. This position will play a pivotal role in our go to market strategy that includes serving farmers with on-farm storage, commercial grain facilities, and specialty crops/materials. We are a small but capable team that is looking for the right individual to become our product design / hardware engineering lead. In this role, you will help take our working prototype to production. This includes but is not limited to design for manufacturability, determining robot functionality, designing peripheral components, and leading safety certifications.


  • Provide Mechanical Engineering and Product Design leadership.
  • Lead the development of a large-scale robotic system from concept through multiple prototype builds to deliver a verified MVP design.
  • Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at scale.
  • Writing and developing functional specifications, design verification plans, evaluations, test procedures, FMEA documents.
  • Participate in high level exploration and analysis of business problems and user needs.
  • Select sensing and other hardware components and technologies to enable rapid prototyping, conduct experiments, simulations, data collection, perform system and sub-system level testing.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on current state of the art for the full stack of robotics technologies and directly contribute in a hands-on manner to solving major technical challenges.
  • Play a pivotal role in growing the robotics team.

Full Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or similarly related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5+ years in product design and development of robotic and/or mechatronic systems.
  • Deep and current knowledge of standard robotics techniques – including sensor fusion, embedded systems, mechanics and state estimation techniques for perception, localization, navigation, planning and manipulation.
  • Experience developing engineering ideas from concept through production.
  • Experience defining engineering requirements and hardware architecture for complex systems.
  • Hands-on experience with equipment design, machine design, system development and product integration.
  • Hands-on project management experience with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing quality engineering principles through development programs including experience with tools/methods/concepts such as FMEA, ISO 9001, IECEx and risk management.
  • Experience effectively communicating technical ideas to stakeholders both verbally and in writing

Job Type: Full-time
